Youths In Politics

According to Kenyan Constitution, the term “youth” refers to people ages 18 to 35 years regardless of the gender. Article 55 of Kenyan Constitution provides that the State shall take measures, including affirmative action programmes, to ensure that the youth have opportunities to associate, be represented and participate in political, social, economic and other spheres of life.

BUT, in Kenya, the role of the youths in politics has been reduced to actively taking part in electoral processes. Politicians and Political Parties feels that youths should not take part in active politics and leadership. Thus, Kenyan Politics is dominated by middle-aged and old Politicians who exclude youths in Politics and leadership with the excuse that youth are immature and inexperienced to take part in active politics.

They also argue that, youths would waste a lot of time in attending meetings and rallies during campaign periods which can be utilised in doing studies, research and building the nation. But, they forget that youths participate in University and Collage politics which usually take part in each and every year unlike national politics which takes part once in every five years.

The fact why career Politicians and Political Parties don't want to incorporate youths in active politics is that; youths are highly educated and intelligent and are full of new ideas unlike the old politicians who are schooled with old ways of doing politics and things thus they can't compete and will result to youths dominating the political arena which will result to fall of old regime or demagogues of 'Leaders for Life'

The Big Question For Youths in Politics

That's why the State and Kenyan Political Parties have failed totally to put up measures to make sure youths are represented and participate in active politics. In the first place, there's no elective seat for Youths Representatives as it is with Women Representatives. Also, Kenyan Political Parties put up high nomination fees which most common youths cannot afford thus locking them out. Thus, Kenyan Politics is exclusive rather than inclusive to youths.

Also, Demagogue Politicians uses youths as voting machines and campaign tools by giving them as little as 50 Shillings or 100 Shillings to vote them to go get paid millions and steal billions. Also youths are used in dirty politics and to fight all their antagonists. They use youths to cause violence against their relatives and neighbors for them to get powers while their families live in far foreign countries.

The role of Youths in Politics need to change in Kenya and can only be changed by youths! Youths are alone and need to fight for themselves. It's the early time for youths to fight for what is rightfully theirs. It's the early time for youths to advance the politics of their countries. It's the early time for youths to go for that MCA, MP, Senator or Governor Seat. In the wallet, youths can't compete with old health problematic politicians but in the ballot, youths can compete and win.
